How to Use Your BlueAccount HSA

Your BlueAccount HSA is easy to maintain and track. Simply log on to your Highmark member Web site at www.highmarkbcbs.com, select the “Your Spending” tab and click on the “Spending Account” link. Here you can access all your account information. This is the usual process for using your account:

  1. You receive eligible health care services.
  2. Your in-network health care provider submits a claim to Highmark.
  3. Highmark processes the claim, determines allowable charges and applies eligible expenses toward your deductible.
  4. If the deductible has not been met, no payment is made and the provider bills you. If the deductible has been met, the claim is processed by Highmark.
  5. You receive an EOB (Explanation of Benefits) statement with claim information in the mail, or you can review this information online.
  6. If the deductible has not been met, you decide whether to use the money in your HSA or to pay it out of your own pocket, preserving account funds for a future need. If you decide to use the money in the HSA, you can either:
    • Submit the claim online to the account administrator
    • Submit a paper claim
    • Elect to have all claims automatically submitted to your HSA
    • Use your HSA debit card (if you opted for this convenience when you opened your account).
  7. (If you decide to pay out-of-pocket, steps 7 and 8 do not apply.) The HSA account balance is verified, your claim is paid from the account and a check is issued to you, or you can elect to have payments deposited directly into your bank account.
  8. You use the redemption to pay the provider the amount due. You can also elect for Highmark to pay the provider on your behalf.
